DOI: 10.1177/107780042238077 Emotional Space: Performing the Resistive Possibilities of Torch SingingUniversity of South Florida Torch songs are standardsmusical forms and formulas that recount the pain and sufferingof unrequited love. But torch songs are also sitesinterpretive spaces waiting tobe filled by a performance. As such, torch singing is at once a product and producer ofactiona site for concerted connection, deliberation, and contention. The resistive possibilitiesof a song of unrequited love are generated in the singing, in how a performanceof a standard creates new spaces, new movements, and new meanings.
