"If You Know Our Names It Helps!"

Students’ Perspectives About "Good" Teaching

Joanne Robertson

St. John’s University, Jamaica, New York

The purpose of this narrative is to explore students’ perceptions of exemplary and effective teachers, contextualized within contemporary conversations about "evidence-based" instruction and school reform. A brief overview of audience performance texts and their implications for teacher education programs is first provided, followed by the role-play of a panel discussion among students, educators, and policy makers. The text highlights the relationship between students’ perceptions and the research regarding optimal teaching strategies and learning environments.

Key Words: teaching • students’ perceptions • literacy and learning
